Homeschool Hive helps you discover a wide variety of educational events and activities for your family. This guide shows you how to find and explore events.
Browse Events
All Events
- Click Events in the main navigation
- Browse the list of upcoming events
- Events are sorted by date, with the soonest events first
Events from Your Groups
To see events from groups you've joined:
- Click Events in the navigation
- Select My Events
- View events from all your groups in one place
Search for Events
Use the search bar to find specific events:
- Enter keywords related to the event
- Press Enter or click the search icon
- Results show matching events
Search examples:
- Activity type: "field trip", "art class", "nature walk"
- Subject: "science", "history", "music"
- Location: "zoo", "museum", "park"
Filter Events
Narrow your search using filters:
By Date
- Today - Events happening today
- This Week - Events in the next 7 days
- This Month - Events in the current month
- Custom Range - Select specific start and end dates
By Location
Finding events near you is now smarter with automatic location detection:
- Automatic Location Detection - When you visit the Events page, your browser will ask for permission to access your location. Allowing this shows you events closest to you automatically, sorted by proximity.
- Smart Search Expansion - If there are only a few events nearby, Homeschool Hive automatically expands the search radius to show you more options, ensuring you always find great activities.
- City/Zip Code - Enter a specific location to search if you prefer not to share your location
- Radius - Choose how far you're willing to travel (5, 10, 25, 50+ miles)
- Virtual - Online events you can attend from home
For the best experience, allow your browser to access your location when prompted. This helps show you the most relevant events in your area first, sorted by distance.
By Category
Filter by event type:
- Field trips
- Classes and workshops
- Social events
- Sports and recreation
- Arts and music
- STEM activities
- Co-op meetings
By Price
- Free - No cost events
- Paid - Events with registration fees
Using the Interactive Map
The Events page includes an interactive map that makes it easy to visualize where events are located:
Map Features
- Map Markers - Each event appears as a marker on the map showing its location
- Hover Previews - Move your cursor over any map marker to see a quick preview of the event, including:
- Event name
- Date and time
- Distance from your location
- Price (if any)
- Brief description
- Click for Details - Click on a map marker to open the full event details page
Tips for Using the Map
- Zoom In/Out - Use the map controls or your mouse wheel to adjust the view
- Pan Around - Click and drag to explore different areas
- Compare Locations - Quickly see which events are closest to you or along your regular routes
- Combined with Filters - The map updates automatically when you apply filters, showing only events that match your criteria
The map makes it easy to find events along your daily routes. Look for markers near places you already visit regularly like libraries, parks, or shopping areas.
Understanding Event Listings
Each event card shows key information:
Event Status Badges
- Event Today! - The event is happening today
- Soon - The event is within the next 7 days
- Almost Full - Only a few spots remaining
- Full - No spots available (add to Watchlist to get notified when spots open)
Event Details
- Title - Name of the event
- Date & Time - When the event takes place
- Location - Where the event is held (or "Virtual" for online events)
- Group - Which group is hosting the event
- Attendees - How many people are going
- Price - Cost to attend (if any)
View Event Details
Click on any event to see the full details:
- Description - What the event is about
- Schedule - Start time, end time, duration
- Location - Address with map (for in-person events)
- Virtual Link - Meeting URL (for online events)
- Tickets - Available ticket types and prices
- Capacity - Total spots and remaining availability
- Attendee Requirements - Information needed for registration
- Discussion - Comments and questions about the event
Save Events to Your Watchlist
The Watchlist feature helps you keep track of events you're interested in, even if you're not ready to RSVP yet. Save events to your watchlist to stay updated on availability and get quick access when you're ready to register.
What is the Watchlist?
Your Watchlist is a personalized collection of events you want to keep tabs on. Think of it as a favorites list that helps you:
- Save events you're interested in attending
- Track availability for events that are near capacity or full
- Get notifications when spots open up in full events
- Receive alerts when watched events have 3 tickets or less remaining
- Quick access to events you want to attend without searching again
When you add an event to your watchlist, Homeschool Hive will notify you about important updates like capacity changes and spot availability.
Adding Events to Your Watchlist
You can add any event to your watchlist directly from event listings:
- Browse or search for events you're interested in
- Hover over an event card - a bookmark icon appears in the top-right corner
- Click the bookmark icon to add the event to your watchlist
- The bookmark icon turns red and fills in, confirming the event is saved
The bookmark button appears on:
- Event cards in the Events browse page
- Event search results
- Event detail pages
- Events shown on the interactive map
Events you've already saved show a filled red bookmark icon, even without hovering.
Viewing Your Watchlist
Access your complete watchlist to see all saved events in one organized view:
- Navigate to
/watchlistin your browser, or - Look for the watchlist link in the account menu
- Your watchlist displays events organized by helpful categories
Watchlist Tabs:
- Upcoming - Events you've saved that still have availability
- Near Capacity - Events with 3 tickets or less remaining (act fast!)
- Full - Events at capacity where you're waiting for spots to open
- Past - Historical events you had saved
Each tab shows the count of events in that category, making it easy to see what needs your attention.
The "Near Capacity" tab shows events with only a few spots left. These events may fill up soon, so review them first!
Quick RSVP from Watchlist
Once you've decided to attend a watched event, you can register directly from your watchlist:
- Open your watchlist at
/watchlist - Find the event you want to attend
- Click the event card to view full details
- Click the RSVP button to start registration
- Complete the registration process as normal
No need to search for the event again - everything is ready at your fingertips.
Removing Events from Watchlist
You can remove events from your watchlist at any time:
From Event Cards:
- Hover over any event card showing a filled red bookmark
- Click the bookmark icon - it changes to unfilled gray
- The event is immediately removed from your watchlist
From the Watchlist Page:
- Navigate to your watchlist at
/watchlist - Find the event you want to remove
- Click the bookmark icon on the event card
- The event disappears from your watchlist
Events are automatically removed from your watchlist after they've passed, but you can still view them in the "Past" tab for reference.
Understanding Watchlist Status Badges
When viewing your watchlist, you'll see helpful status badges:
- X% Full (yellow badge) - Event is near capacity, shown in "Near Capacity" tab
- Sold Out (red badge) - Event is full, shown in "Full" tab
- Added date - Shows when you added the event to your watchlist
- Ticket type - If you indicated interest in a specific ticket type
View Your Events
See all events you're registered for:
- Click Events > My Events
- View your upcoming events
- Filter by status: Going, Past
